With the giving nature of the Leeton community, it can be hard for organisations to come up with fundraising ideas that don't give the impression of someone always putting their hand out. However, JumpStart did come up with a novel fundraiser that stems from Leeton agricultural background and associated industries.
A simple idea floated by Barry and Trish Tiffen at a committee meeting resulted in a whirlwind of action to establish the JumpStart Farm. With the Tiffen's offering the 50 hectares of land for the crop, to be grown with the help of donated items, which was then sold with all profits going to JumpStart.
The response to JumpStart Farm was phenomenal. Yenda Producers and MIA Rural Services came on board with barley seed and fertilizer. Farmers donated fertilizer, trucks, auger bin, time and expertise. Local business came on board giving fuel, excavators, spraying equipment, water and crop insurance. Individuals kicked in with chemical and cash donations.
Our Barley crop was sown in May 2006 thanks to the generosity of Case IH and Intersales staff. The Crop received 100 mls of rain during the growing season and one paddock received water thanks to Murrumbidgee Irrigation.
Harvesting took place in November resulting in 120 tonnes of barley being delivered.
A generous neighbour then baled 600 small barley stubble bales and these have all been sold adding to JumpStart's bank account.
